Why I paint...

I have been painting all my life. Sounds cliche, but it's true.

In elementary school, I remember having elaborate floral designs in my head as I was coloring at the table with my classmates. They were drawing small, lollipop trees and flowers, maybe a puppy, but I envisioned a whole landscape of my version of Monet's Garden at Giverny. One day, my father walked in on me lying underneath the craft table painting the underside of the table top. Cautiously, he asked me what I was doing under there. I'm sure he was not quite sure what to expect. And I said something about pretending to be Michelangelo painting the ceiling of the "Sixteenth Chapel." I didn't have the skill, supplies or vocabulary to express what I saw in my head, but it was there waiting to come out, nonetheless.

My creativity was overshadowed by life during my high school years, but in college at SUNY Geneseo and SUNY New Paltz, as a literature major and a fine arts minor, I caught the bug again. My photography and painting classes relit that flame that had burned so intensely when I was small. After college, I worked as a computer graphic artist for a while. Then I thought wedding and portrait photography was my calling. And then life took another turn and I found passion and meaning in teaching high school English and in motherhood. Life was pretty busy and my own art took a back seat to encouraging my own children through many art projects I created for them to express themselves.

Flash forward a decade, now divorced and in my own home, I set up an art studio for myself (and my talented daughter) because I decided that, once again, I was going to paint. It wasn't just that. I NEEDED to paint. I was anxious, worried about everything and impatient and I was COMPELLED to paint. It was like coming home again. I fell in love again with blending colors, the way the brushes felt in my hands, the movement of the brush strokes. This was not only the birth and evolution of new paintings, but a rebirth of myself. I painted because I needed to paint and create, not out of any specific desire to sell my art or turn painting into a business.

A few months into this burst of color in my life, a few friends came into my studio to see what I was up to and their responses blew me away. They were very impressed with what I was doing, much more than I expected and I even got my first commission right there on the spot. After a little time, I started sharing my new paintings on social media, received a lot of interest and more sales. My paintings were now living in homes and businesses in five states. And Marci Brockmann, professional artist was born.

Slowly, I added decorative pillows and silky scarves in the designs of my paintings to my product line and began to sell them online, through social media and am lucky enough to be part of the growing family of artists to show and sell their work at Nest on Main in Northport, NY. (www.nestonmainmarket.com).

This business, which started so many years ago underneath my childhood craft table, was born out of the need to create beautiful things with color and shape and texture. In painting, I found a peaceful space to block out the complications of the world and be one with myself. Imagination is something we all share as humans, and letting it out to take shape creatively is a blessing.

Being able to create things that bring beauty and pleasure to other peoples' lives is one of life's greatest joys for me. The sale of my originals, limited edition runs, prints, and decorative pillows give me the opportunities to help others add beauty and color to their homes and businesses. And my scarves are wearable art that add personality, zest, flair and beauty to anyone's wardrobe.
